Department of Social Work Hosts 2014 Spring Symposium

On March 26, 2014, the NC State Department of Social Work hosted its spring symposium, A World Where All People Matter: Future Trends in Practice with Older Adults. The keynote speaker, Dr. Karen Bullock, emphasized the need for students to be prepared to work with older adults, citing that 53 percent of Americans will be over 65 by the year 2020. Four dynamic panelists continued the discussion.

Students Complete International Research for Stop Hunger Now

In February 2014, 13 graduate students from the Masters of Social Work program at NC State, three staff members, and faculty adviser Dr. Marcie Fisher-Borne traveled to the Dominican Republic as part of a year-long evaluation research project for international nonprofit Stop Hunger Now. The trip provided students with excellent field research experience. It also gave them with a more nuanced understanding of chronic hunger and the solutions for ending the problem.

Child Welfare Collaborative Students Participate in Mock Trial

During the 2013 fall semester, NC State Child Welfare Collaborative students learned how to prepare and give testimony during court appearances. Law faculty and students from NC Central University trained MSW students to prepare for trial of an abuse/neglect/dependency case by working with them to conduct a mock trial of an actual case.

On July 1, 2013, it was my greatest honor to be appointed as head of the Department of Social Work. This year marks our 40th anniversary of being a CSWE accredited social work program. Collectively, our students, alumni, and faculty are changing the world through social action and community engagement. Maymester: One Course, Three Weeks, Three Credits

Last May, CHASS piloted Maymester, a three-week academic session that combines an intensive schedule with small class sizes to create an enriching and in-depth educational experience for professors and students alike. Based on positive feedback from faculty and students, the college has been asked to organize Maymester 2014.

Student Advisers Honored

When NC State recognized its outstanding undergraduate academic advisers recently, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences was well represented.
