Faculty Highlight: Dr. Intae Yoon – Creating Community for Korean Americans and Indigenous Peoples
On April 20, 2022, the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED) presented the Chancellor’s Creating Community Awards.
At this award ceremony Dr. Intae Yoon, Associate Professor of Social Work, was presented the Chancellor’s Creating Community Award for Outstanding Faculty. The purpose of this award was to recognize individuals who demonstrate excellence in the incorporation of diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, service, and collaboration.
In particular, this award highlighted Dr. Yoon’s numerous efforts to support Korean Americans and indigenous/tribal peoples. His recent efforts include: assisting Korean Americans with their understanding of various government rescue and relief programs, translating and disseminating CDC regulations and guidelines to Korean Americans, organizing a joint conference to address hate crimes and high unemployment, offering pro-bono financial management workshops to graduating social work students in the U.S. and South Korea, creating a Medicare advocacy YouTube channel, personally purchasing over 500 surgical masks for the Cherokee Nation during the COVID-19 pandemic, and connecting two dozen doctoral/post-doctoral students with an immigration lawyer when most immigration visa processes were halted due to the pandemic. Today nearly every student is continuing their education or is employed in the U.S.
This plethora of community building and support has helped countless individuals both domestically and internationally. Our School is ecstatic about Dr. Yoon’s University-wide recognition for his recent efforts.
