American Cancer Society Appoints Chair of Research Committee on Oncology Social Work Training

Karen Bullock, Head of the Department of Social Work, has been appointed by the American Cancer Society to chair the Peer Review Research Committee on Oncology Social Work Training Grants, beginning January 1, 2108. This committee reviews applications and recommends recipients for master’s and post-master’s level Clinical Oncology Social Work research. It also advises the Society on matters of policy governing the programs. The members are experts in oncology social work clinical practice and research related to pediatric and adult patients and their families.

Dr. Bullock is a ’90 alumna of NC State. She earned a master’s degree from Columbia University in New York City and PhD from Boston University. With more than 20 years of clinical practice experience, in primary care settings, Dr. Bullock’s areas of expertise include behavioral health interventions, hospice, palliative and end-of-life care. She serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Psychosocial Oncology and is the section editor for Practice Concepts and Innovations in the Journal of Social Work in End-of-Life and Palliative Care.

Her own research is published in the Handbook of Oncology Social Work: Psychosocial Care for People with Cancer and the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Social Work, in addition numerous peer-reviewed journal article publications, including the Journal of Palliative Medicine.
