BSW Program

The purpose of the North Carolina State University Social Work BSW program is to prepare students for first-level professional practice in social work or for advanced graduate-level academic work. The emphasis throughout the program is upon the student learning to be the professional she or he wishes to become. The program allows both a high degree of interaction between teacher and students in class and the opportunity for students to work together with faculty individually on academic projects or through advising.

Mission of the BSW program

The mission of the BSW program is to promote a socially responsible¹ society through education, research, and extension/community service. Within a framework emphasizing professional values and ethics, cultural competence, strengths, and partnerships, the Department of Social Work prepares students for generalist practice and graduate-level academic work.

¹Social responsibility is defined as an ethical commitment to advance social and economic justice.

Goals and objectives

  1. To offer a supportive and challenging learning environment where students develop the knowledge, skills, and values for socially responsible practice.
  2. To understand, design, and participate in inquiry that is conducted in a socially responsible manner and that contributes to the knowledge base of social work.
  3. To appreciate and utilize extension and community service in building local, state, national, and international partnerships that enhance human well being and promote social and economic justice.

Accreditation

The BSW Program at North Carolina State is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, the official accrediting agency for social work education in the U.S. Accreditation certifies that the North Carolina State University BSW program meets or exceeds national standards relative to quality of faculty, breadth of curriculum, quality of field experience, library holdings and the like.

Coursework

The coursework in social work involves the study of social programs and policy; human behavior and social organization; social research; and the specific elements of knowledge, skills and values necessary for social work practice. Our curriculum requires that every student complete courses in these areas, and our faculty has been selected for strength in one or more of these academic areas.

The BSW Curriculum Guide *requires Adobe Reader outlines the specific requirements for any social work major in addition to providing an overview of the program.

The Course Catalog provides a listing of all the social work courses taught at NC State University.

Practice

The program also includes extensive opportunities for students to work in social agencies, developing professional skill and exercising professional judgment under the supervision of faculty and specially selected field supervisors. The North Carolina State University Department of Social Work has an association with social agencies and supervisors throughout the state. Such agencies include several mental health centers, public schools, family and child service programs, services for the aging, correctional programs for adults and juveniles, child abuse and neglect programs and county departments of social services.

Students may request travel assistance to their field placement agencies if the distance between the agency and their home exceeds 60 miles round trip.
