Fostering Yes |
|
| Researchers at N.C. State are working with Cumberland County Schools in an effort to improve education among foster children. The university's Department of Social Work says it will examine issues that might interrupt the learning process such as frequently switching schools. Dr. Joan Pennell is a professor of social work at N.C. State and the program's principal investigator. Dr. Joan Pennell: When young people's education is stabilized - they're performing better, they're more successful - this also means that what's happening within the home they're living in, whether it's foster care or they're reunited with their families, that things tend to go better there as well. The project is funded by a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Children's Bureau over the next 17 months. Researchers expect to work with local social workers in and around Fayetteville. Pennell says the research group expects to produce a blueprint for similar programs in school districts across the country. |

National Hunger and Homelessness Week |
|
| BSW students and friends met last night for a Sleep Outside night on the brickyard to honor National Hunger and Homelessness Week. Approximately 15 students, faculty and visitors from the Helen Wright Center Shelter mingled over coffee and doughnuts to discuss the consequences of homelessness. Refrigerator boxes dotted the area in preparation for sleeping on a very cold evening. Sponsored by the BSSWA, the event highlighted the plight of so many people experiencing homelessness and poverty here in Raleigh. The guests from Helen Wright Center spoke honestly about their experiences, resources and strategies for being homeless in our city. We were so privileged to have their company. | |

Social Work Volunteer Career Fair"The fall 2011 Department of Social Work Volunteer/Career Fair was a huge success. Every semester organizations and agencies are invited to participate in order to attract volunteers, interns and potential employees; the fall event included 43 participants. The triangle area is rich in resources and this fair highlights many of them. Social work students and alumni benefit from networking and making agency connections and students across the campus are welcome as well. In addition, students and faculty from area colleges and universities also attend and find the partnership with NC State valuable. This exciting event in the Caldwell Lounge was attended by ~300 people. A good time was had by all!"
