Giving Voice to Children and Families
Joan Pennell serves as lead guest editor for a special issue of the country's leading journal on child welfare. Child Welfare published the special issue, "Taking Child and Family Rights Seriously" (2011, Issue #4) to highlight family engagement in child welfare, and Pennell is an expert in the topic. "Involving families in decision making is the primary area of my work," says Pennell, an NC State professor of social work and director of the Center for Family and Community Engagement.

Vote For Justice
The Graduate Student Social Work Association hosted an event last night to educate people about the potentially negative side of Amendment One, which will be on the ballot for the May 8 election. The amendment deals specifically with the legal definition of partnership and marriage, as well as the rights accompanying it, in North Carolina.

About 55 social work students were involved in the creation of this event, according to Linda Williams, program director in social work. Williams said the students involved in the planning chose to focus on Amendment One because it directly relates to their major. "Part of our mission as social workers is social justice. This is the epitome of social injustice. It's not one of those things you can let go," Williams said. Barbara Zelter, Clinical Assistant Professor in social work, assisted a great deal with the organization of this event, Williams said.
