We are now accepting applications for Summer 2010.

Application Deadline: February 1, 2010

Applications and materials must be submitted prior to the deadline.

You MUST submit one original and one copy of your MSW Application

to the Social Work Department at:

Note: there are two separate applications to complete.

One is the online graduate application to the Graduate School via ApplyYourself,

which must be accompanied by the application fee.

The other is the departmental MSW Application for Admission,

which must be mailed to the Department of Social Work.

DO NOT submit references or include your personal statement with

your Graduate School application.

DO NOT send hard copy application materials to the Graduate School.

DO NOT use Graduate School forms for your MSW departmental application.

Instructions for Completing the MSW Application

You must complete an online Graduate School Application and a paper Departmental Application. Both applications for admission must be complete and received by 5:00 p.m. on the deadline date.

  1. Graduate School Application: - Submit online directly to the North Carolina State University Graduate School. Also, please note the following:
    1. Do NOT complete a “personal statement” for this online Graduate School Application. All applicants need only to complete ONE personal statement following the guidelines in the Departmental Application.
    2. Do NOT submit references online to the graduate school. Submit all references to the department in your application package, using the forms provided in the Departmental Application. Do NOT use the reference forms provided by the Graduate School, they will not be accepted.
    3. Do NOT submit transcripts to the Graduate School. Applicants are required to submit TWO official transcripts in their Department Application package. The Department will forward one of these copies to the Graduate School, you do NOT need to do so.
    4. Your application fee of $65 must be paid to the Graduate School before the Department can review your application. If your fee is not paid by the priority deadline, then your application will be considered late.
  2. Departmental Application for Admission: PDF *requires Adobe Reader | Word *requires Microsoft Word - Mail or deliver directly to the Department of Social Work. Send an original and one additional copy of the application and supporting materials all together in ONE package. Package MUST contain all of the following:
    1. Departmental Application. Must be Word processed (12 pt font)
    2. Personal Statement, signed and dated (guide provided; be sure to respond only to the questions asked). Note: Do NOT complete an additional personal statement for the online Graduate School application.
    3. TWO OFFICIAL sealed copies of transcripts from each undergraduate and/or graduate school you have attended. Note: Do NOT submit additional transcripts to the Graduate School.
    4. Résumé (résumé guide provided)
    5. Professional Integrity Statement (must be signed)
    6. Weekend Program Supplemental Application (Weekend Program applicants only)
    7. Completed Worksheet for Computing your GPA (worksheet and instructions provided). Note: Must be completed by all applicants. Be sure to calculate ONLY the last 60 credit hours of your Undergraduate work.
    8. Petition for Exceptional Consideration (completed only by applicants with a GPA below 3.0). Note: a letter must be submitted to accompany form; see form for directions.
    9. Recommendation forms from the MSW Application and recommendation letters -- a minimum of three (3). Note: You must use the reference form provided in the Departmental Application, NOT the reference form provided in the Graduate School application.
      • Select individuals who are in a position to give an assessment of your professional and/or academic abilities and your readiness for social work graduate education. Note: Ideally, you should submit ONE academic reference from a professor or advisor, and TWO professional references from supervisors or other persons familiar with your work related to human services. (In the absence of an academic reference, all three should be professional references).
      • Do NOT use a personal friend, family member, or employee as a reference.
      • Provide each evaluator (recommender) with the “Recommendation Form.” Ask her/him to complete the form, attach a supporting letter, enclose the materials in an envelope, and sign and date the envelope seal..
      • Recommendation envelopes MUST be signed and dated across the seal and MUST remain sealed when submitted with your application.
      • Do NOT open your recommendation envelope to make copies.
  3. GRE or MAT: Only for applicants with a calculated GPA less than 3.0 for the last 60 hours of undergraduate course work. If you already have a graduate degree with a 3.0 GPA or higher, you are also exempt from taking the GRE or MAT. A worksheet for calculating your GPA for the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework is included in the Departmental Application.  EVERY applicant is REQUIRED to complete and submit this worksheet, regardless of undergraduate GPA. GRE or MAT scores should be submitted directly to the Graduate School.

Submit your paper application in ONE package. Your application package MUST contain an original and one copy of your application; the Program will not copy missing documents. Recommendation envelopes and transcripts must remain sealed, do NOT open them to make copies. We advise you to keep an additional copy of your application for your records.

Submit your application materials as early as possible, well before the priority deadline, to provide the Admissions Committee with adequate time for the preparation and assessment of all applications. Applications are reviewed only upon receipt of all application materials.

 

Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (any major) from an accredited liberal arts college or university.
  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher for the last 60 hours of academic work or a GPA of 3.0 or above in previous graduate work. (Students with a GPA less than 3.0 but greater than 2.5 for the last 60 hours of academic course work must have official Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) scores forwarded to the Graduate School.)
  • Liberal arts coursework in the social sciences, humanities, human biology, and statistics.
    • Applicants MUST have completed a statistics course, with a grade of C or better, within 5 years prior to enrolling in the MSW Program (ex. for Fall 2010 Admission, applicants must have completed a Statistics course AFTER the fall of 2005, but BEFORE the program starts in Fall 2010).
    • You also must have completed an undergraduate-level human biology course, with a grade of C or better, prior to enrolling in the MSW program. This course does NOT have to be taken within five years of enrolling in the MSW program.
  • A variety of life and work experience in human services, paid or volunteer.
  • Prepare a personal statement (maximum of seven pages) addressing questions on the MSW application form.

Conditions for Low GPA

You may submit a typed petition for exceptional consideration that addresses the following:

  • Were there any limitations that affected your GPA?
  • Your plan to address these limitations?
  • Extenuating circumstances contributing to the GPA?
  • How have you resolved these circumstances?

Transfer of MSW Credits from another University

Applicants requesting to transfer credits from another university must complete the Transfer Credit Information form and provide the outlined supporting documentation at the time of applying. Only MSW credits from a fully CSWE accredited MSW program will be taken into consideration. You must also email syllabi from courses for which you are requesting credit to ekalbar@ncsu.edu so faculty can evaluate the courses for content equivalent to our curriculum. Please note that NCSU operates on a semester system.

Residency

To qualify for the resident tuition rate, you must maintain legal residency in North Carolina for one year from the start of the term for which you request the resident classification. For more information, visit the Graduate School residency webpage. Out-of-state applicants may contact the NCSU Graduate School Residency Officer for guidance.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

If English is not your native language, you must take the TOEFL. Please contact the Graduate School for additional information. Note: International applications must submit additional documents. Please contact International Scholar and Student Services office (919) 515-2961, OISSS website.

Withdrawal of Application

If at any time after submitting your application you decide not to complete the process, please notify the Graduate School immediately in writing.
