Bereavement and Leave Policy
Employees may use an acceptable form of leave (i.e. sick, annual, bonus) to be out of work during a "bereavement" period.
The University regulation on the purpose of sick leave allows employees to recover from personal illness or injury, medical appointments, temporary disability due to childbirth, care for member of immediate family, death in immediate family, donations to a member of the immediate family who is an approved voluntary shared leave recipient and adoption of a child, limited to a maximum of 30 days for each parent (which is equivalent to a biological mother's average period of disability).
This regulation covers SPA employees and EPA employees who are 0.50 FTE or greater and are employed on a 10, 11 or 12 month contract, Research Associate (Post Docs), Teaching Associate (Post Docs), (Post Doc) Intern, and Resident (Post Doc) employees. Further information can be found on the HR Website at the following URL: http://www7.acs.ncsu.edu/hr/hrim/sick_lv.asp.
For academic year (9-month) faculty this type of leave would fall under the regulation for Medical, Maternity and Parental Leave for Faculty with Academic Year Appointments. This regulation can be found at the following URL: http://www.ncsu.edu/policies/employment/leave/POL05.30.1.php
