About Us
The Department of Social Work at NC State University has offered a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) for over 30 years and is among the earliest accredited BSW programs in the United States. At the undergraduate level, we also offer a minor in Social Work. In fall 2005, we commenced a Master of Social Work program with both full-time and part-time courses of study. The MSW program prepares students for advanced practice and leadership positions.
The mission of the Department of Social Work is to promote a socially responsible society through education, research, and extension/community service. Social responsibility is defined as an ethical commitment to advance social and economic justice. Within a framework emphasizing professional values and ethics, cultural competence, strengths, and partnerships, the Social Work Program prepares undergraduate students for generalist practice and graduate-level academic work and prepares graduate students for advanced practice and leadership roles.
In keeping with this mission, we encourage our students to develop skills, knowledge, and values that advance the dignity of all people. We are dedicated to promoting this framework in our teaching, advising, practice, and research.
Our faculty is diverse in background and experience. We are proud that our student body includes a solid African American presence. We encourage students from other groups to apply. Our student associations are welcoming and productive.
Our faculty are committed to excellence in teaching, research, and public service and are joined by a lively group of adjunct faculty, dedicated support staff, community-involved project staff, and active advisory councils.
Our department takes special care of partnerships with the public, nonprofit, and private sectors and emphasizes student and faculty involvement in professional, service, and academic associations and organizations. We welcome feedback to maintain the integrity and quality of our department.
